The Motor Thing:

The Power Fan

When building an RV9 Aircraft, the biggest decision is what do I power it with?

Well I thought that a Fuel Cell powered electric motor would be nice.

Quietly wafting through the air to the hum of a finely balanced electric motor.

Where would I get the Hydrogen? or the smarts to build the danged thing?

Another possibility would be a new diesel, they are coming out next year.

Fill her up with jet fuel, or kerosene, or home heating oil.

Cruise around all day on four gallons an hour!

Well I hear that they are a bit heavy,

and not really ready.

Or how about a Subaru? They are available now. With fuel injection!

Complete bolt in kits are available, with everything needed. Just bolt on!

Another possibility would be the Mazda rotary, just like a turbine, smooth.

So what did I do?

Lycoming O-235-C1

Bought myself a Lycoming

An O-235-C1 Lycoming, air cooled flat four, with carburetor and magnetos.

It cost more than than my Ford 9N tractor, and is less sophisticated.

Archaic Accessories

So I am going to put a used motor in my new plane.

But the decision has been made, I shall use the same engine used by Piper and Cessna.

Time tested, insurable, a real aircraft engine. Also it is much cheaper than new.

Old Reliable

The engine is upside down in these photos, that is to keep the cam lubricated.

It is of course way to early in my project to get the engine.

However it keeps my from thinking about that decision.

Now do I want a wood or metal prop.

Should the pitch be 60,

or 65?
